During Your Retreat in Costa Rica! Don't Miss The Saturday Market

Saturdaymarket

Whether living or visiting in Costa Rica's Central Valley be certain not to miss Escazu's Saturday Market.  Since I have been living in Latin America,  I've become a Food Market Junkie and let me tell you  the market in Central Escazu, situated in the town square is a treat for the senses!  Protected and blessed by the sculptures of onlooking Religious Saints at the Catholic Church, who needs the FDA stamp of approval?  So, if you  are joinining our personal growth retreats in Costa Rica this summer and fall.  Note:  Our Women's Retreat in October is now accepting regiestrations, www.retreatscostarica.com ask us to  pick you at the airport if you get in early enough, and take you to market first!

The Escazu Market features incredibly fresh fruits and vegetables direct from Central Valley farms.  Over the years including several years owning a restaurant in Escazu, we have developed loyalty to our favorite and colorful vendors. There's the Strawberry Woman, the Orchid Man and Mario, whose farm used to adjoin our property  when we lived further up in the Escazu mountains. Every Friday Afternoon, Mario would play festive music as he loaded his vegetable truck - our auditory signal that the weekend was indeed here.   Now I'll admit we  used to get excited about the misting vegetable machines at Super Fresh Markets when I lived in Pennsylvania and still  treat myself when I'm in The States to a visit to the local Specialty Foods markets like "Whole Foods" .I do this just to see the immense varieties of organic and healthy food options available in North America.  However, Barry and I gasp at the prices!  After many years of living in Latin America, I guess we have sticker shock.  For example, today's Saturday market  bill  was under $10.00 and that's with a huge inventory of items needed for a party we are hosting on Tuesday Night.

But it's more than the freshness and the pricing that makes Latin American Food Markets and The Escazu Market in particular such a treat.   The Saturday Market is where everyone on the mountain celebrates the end of another work week.  Musicians play, Neighbors Exchange News and it seems we all look up to the towering Escazu Mountains.   Gracias "El Senor" for another day in tropical paradise.

Retreats Costa Rica offers 8 day /7 night all- inclusive learning adventures for indiividuals and groups.

Executive Medical Check-Ups for Your Team Members? Explore An Executive Spa in Costa Rica!

Executive Check-Ups at CIMA-Costa Rica's Newest State of the Art Hospital

Whitehouse2th

Costa Rica's Retreat & Recovery Centers

This Month's Continental Airlines magazine featured an extensive article on the growing popularity of "The CEO Executive Check-UP".  According to the article,  many companies are including these VIP Annual Health Checks which may or may not becovered by insurance in their executive compensations packages. Reason:  It's Good Business with ROI!   A 2002 University of Michigan Management Research Center Report found that executives who underwent such exams submitted 20% fewer health claims and lost 45% fewer workdays than executives who didn't.

With Spa-inspired settings, streamlined tailored services, state of the art  and economical medical care , including healthy lifestyle coaching amidst the rain forest, geared just for busy executives,  Costa Rica has become an international center for These  Executive Spa Retreats.

Costa Rica, is a short 2.5 hour flight from Miami, 3.5 hours from Dallas  and 4.5 hours from New York  it also has the advantage of eligibility as a tax-deductible meeting destination by current IRS Regulations.

Retreats Costa Rica arranges in advance to have client medical records sent to our physician team in Costa Rica. They will map out your complete testing and arrange to have all final results forwarded to your personal medical Dr.  We also handle all travel, VIP Hospital Check-In , transportation and plan an Executive/Personal Coaching Session.  Oh and yes, let's not forget making time for Costa Rica Leisure Activities and Tours while you're getting healthy.

Some corporate groups combine the Executive Check-Up Spa with their Annual Business Planning Session.  The Good News is Health Care Costs and Accommodations for a Costa Rica Executive Retreat/Check-Up are much less expensive then you will find in any major U.S. City.    Yesterday, I was in Clinica Biblica , another "state of the art hopital , when a U.S. film crew came in  to the hospital .They were following Dr. Oedding who is considered a leading international orthopedic surgeon.  I kidded with the Dr. that he has become the surgeon for the stars!

Expect continued growth in Costa Rica's Medical Tourism Industry as more and more people discover that  yes  ,you can get that operation, those expensive tests at a fraction of U.S costs and even  "that cosmetic work done" all while  healing and  relaxing  amidst the beauty of Costa Rica.

Maybe it's time for You or your Executive Team to get a "Latitude Adjustment"

Got Stress? Try Giving them the Bird!

Settingbirdfree

While speaking in South East Asia, Rosemary takes part in the Thai Tradition of Setting a Bird Free"

On Stress Reducing Rituals:

One of my cherished memories in Thailand is taking part in the ancient custom of releasing a caged bird.  It is said if one takes part in this beloved Thai custom, your dreams will take flight with the symbolic release of your fears and worries.  Now,  that's what I call a real ritual for releasing stress.

Indeed, my husband Barry and I went in search for just the right bird from the Thai merchants who competed for our attentions.   I disregarded  Barry's comments (He's a New Yorker--not that, that means anything ) that the ritual  was surely some rip-off,  because the  merchants  had trained the birds to fly back into the cages.       No, our little bird would take flight,  even with the bag of stress we had given him and  indeed he did.  As we walked back up the temple staircase, Barry chuckled and said "I must admit giving the bird never felt like that before".

Stress and worries tend to occupy our thoughts as we constantly roll them around in our heads.  They create baggage that weigh us down and seemingly grow larger than life in our own thoughts.  Got Stress?  Think about developing your own ritual for recognizing and releasing your stressors and fears.  The only rule is that you clearly identify and recognize those fears and develop a physical release mechanism.   For example I have attended ceremonies where fears are written on small pieces of paper and thrown into the fire.  (Live Bird not required and this ritual  forces you to write your worries down!) Remember, "If you think it, ink it".

At our personal growth safaris held in Costa Rica , designed to heal mind, body and spirit, --- nature and ritual play a big role in a 7-day retreat from the rat race.   Visit www.retreatscostarica.com for information on our Learning Vacations in April and October.  There's something to be said for a week in paradise where you commune with Parrots and Monkeys in the Rainforest and Soak in Soothing in Hot Springs, heated by an Active Volcano.  I think they call it Paradise!

Creative Canopy: Corporate Think Tanks and Retreats in Costa Rica

Checkmate

Barkvineyards

When leading Strategic Planning & Creativity Sessions at our Corporate Retreat Center in Costa Rica,  I am sometimes asked the question by clients "Rosemary How do you Spot Trends?"  My answer is to give them one of my favorite secret weapons.  "I have a staff of the best Trend-Hunters working for me!".   The good news is you  have that research staff too-- all free of charge via an informative and invaluable web-site to any Entrepreneur, Strategic Planner, Marketing and  Advertising Professional.  The web-site is www.trendhunter.com.   As I prepare on this Sunday to watch this year's  Super bowl Commercials, I checked out this week's product trends on Trend Hunter.  Here's just a glimpse of "What's Cool" this week.    Suspecting that your partner is cheating on you?  Just purchase the Check-Mate Infidelity Kit.  If you think about a CSI swab of  your mate's clothing, you're on to the principles behind this Gotcha.    Tired of drinking your Chardonnay alone as your pampered pooch looks at you with longing?    Your best friend can now join you thanks to  Bark Vineyards who have  developed specialty non-alcoholic wine with labels both you and Fido will love.  How about a fine  "Barkundy" or "White Sniff-n-Tail?    PS: Cats need not feel their nine lives have lost meaning.  There's a Meowlot for the feline in family.       On a more serious note, the site provides trends in all industries with demographic intel helpful to marketers.

Note:  On their site, The Trend Hunters caution that  "Popular is not Cool!  Cool is the Next Big Thing".  The Site's Chief Trend Setter, Jeremy Gutsche notes that Trends are Unique, Cutting Edge and Viral and advises companies that to be a trend-setting company requires the following 5 step recipe:

1) Reset of expectations

2) Observation of Customers

3) A Hunt for Cool

4) Clustering of Insights

5) Developing a Point of View

So what are you waiting for ?    Stay on top of what's hot? what's not and what will be tomorrow's next big thing.

Trend Spotting?
Trend spotting (a.k.a. trend watching) is the science of identifying emerging shifts in our social behavior and aspirations. Trends are driven by a range of factors, including pop culture, media, news, innovation, and the arts. Trend spotting is used by industry professionals to develop products, enhance idea generation, and inform marketing, media, design and strategic planning. By developing a systematic approach to trend spotting, individuals and organizations can better develop disruptive products and creations that dance the beat of cool. www.trendhunter.com

Romancing the Stone: Hot Stone Massage Therapy & Benefits for Women

Hotstone

During the past several weeks, in preparation for our Go Wild! Go GREAT! Women's Retreats,  I have been working with a Native American Teacher here in Costa Rica, known for her gifts in Animal Medicine, Reiki and Hot Stone Massage Therapy. Alida, Costa Rica's own Mother Earth has been my guide as  I have taken a medicine walk, learned the elements of primal screaming and yesterday enjoyed my first "Hot Stone Massage Therapy Session".

Nature has always provided lessons to me in life and is key to my Personal Growth  Retreats,( Hosted in Costa Rica and Atlanta, Georgia January 26th and 27th);  However I am aghast that it took me so long to discover such an incredible therapy inspired by Mother Earth, that has been around since the early 1990's (Origin:1993 by Mary Hannigan, a native of Tucson, Arizona.)

Imagine Flat Palm, Size Stones gathered from Costa Rica's Rivers and Volcanic Areas, purified and then soaked in  150 degree warm lavender water. Then imagine these stones working magic on your body to release tension, release toxins and revitalize your spirit. Alida is an experienced practitioner....She spent hours purifying and heating the stones before my arrival and then  met with me to discuss the healing power of the stones that would be helping me in my quest to release tension and alleviate body aches, caused by too much holiday lifting.     She moved the hot stones down my shoulders and back, resting them in strategic areas of my lower back, palms and feet.

Move over heating pads and microwavable bean bags!......Nothing beats the power of the Stone! The heat combined with the strength of the stones provided by Mother Earth is truly magnificent.

So Hot Tip:  Romance the Stone! Run, don't walk and experience Hot Stone Massage Therapy be it in Costa Rica or your hometown.  If you're visiting or residing In Costa Rica, contact Alida for your own "Medicine Walk" or "Hot Stone Massage Session"

White Water Women: How Navigating the Rapids Helps Handle Stress

Rafting_stock_photos_126_3

Journeybegins_2

These pictures were photographed while white water rafting during one of our  recent Go Wild! Retreats in Costa Rica. (www.retreatscostarica.com)     Yes, our group of personal growth explorers  hit a boulder and survived! all amidst the power of a class 4 river.   "HUA!" we not only survived, we thrived with a new found confidence, that is only found when you go outside of your personal comfort zone.   I only wish,  we had recorded the vocal howls in that raft on the Pacuare River,  as our team  braced for the jolt.   Lesson in Life:  Yes Women, when you see that really  big rock coming toward you, prepare for the guide  to scream   "Get down in the boat" and not ask you politely. He or she is merely triggering your reflexes. It's also one of those few  occasions you can let out an acceptable primal scream and it feels really good!

What is your coping strategy in business and life when you hit a boulder or face one of Life's inevitable Rapids? It could be a minor bump in the road like a stalled project or career.  But maybe it's that life-altering change to your environment , like the end of a long-standing relationship or a sudden illness which hits you and your family like a volcanic eruption.

Learning how to handle life's Rapids or worse,Tsunamis  isn't always easy or particularly graceful,  since the test often comes when we're under the greatest  pressure and not at our personal best.   Life changes like the death of a loved one, divorce, empty nest, career changes all count as examples of those  boulder transition times in which we need our "best thinking at our worst time".  How unfair is that?  Here's a scary thought:  Did you know that when you are angry or in an emotionally charged state, you lose 50% brainpower?---not ideal conditions I'm sure you will agree, for good and calm decision making.  So how can you develop problem solving and stress management skills when you're not in crisis?  Courses in Problem Solving and Stress Management can certainly increase your Psychological Hardiness or maybe you just need to join Proud Mary and go "Rolling on The River".

White Water rafting has many lessons in business and life survival for Women, which is why it's a part of our curriculum at Retreats Costa Rica.  Learning how to read the river, adapt to changing conditions, learning the art of clear and assertive communication with others and always maintaining a positive mental attitude.    You also learn that the best time to enjoy the river and really appreciate the scenery is when the water is almost completely still.  Yes, It's during those blessed moments on a calm river, that awareness and peace are found (On the River and In Life)  Trust me when you're in the midst of a racing rapid--- you're body amped up with adrenaline, you're not looking and certainly not appreciating  the beauty of the water birds.  Just as in life, life when you're running around like a maniac, it's easy to lose site of what's most important in life.

So what are you waiting for?  Prepare for life's inevitable flow and  movement.  My Summer RX prescription for Stress: -Let a River Run through you and see what an amazing force of nature you can be.  As you experience the rapids, let nature be your classroom.

October 20th - October 27th:  Rain forest Butterflies Women's Retreat in Costa Rica---A Retreat and Life-Lift for Mind, Body and Spirit amidst the tropical beauty of Costa Rica.  write Rosemary@retreatscostarica.com or visit www.retreatscostarica.com for the retreat itinerary. We have an amazing group of women attending.

911 Sloth Rescue-Costa Rica

Workatrescue

Today we visited Costa Rica's Sloth Rescue Center located near Cahuita, Costa Rica.  It  certainly will be a tour stop for our upcoming Women's Retreat in October and a top recommendation for those wanting to experience what I believe is the "Real Costa Rica."  As I said yesterday in my post, I believe a woman should rescue a sloth at least once in her lifetime (humans excluded) and so today Barry and I set forth on a quest:  Rescue a sloth or at least support those doing the job everyday in the jungle.

We had heard about Luis and Judy Arroyo, a couple who literally changed their destiny with the arrival of an unexpected guest.  Judy from Alaska had met Luis, a Costa Rican and together had opened a bed and breakfast inn that showcased a birding paradise.  But they would turn from Innkeeper to Keepers of a different  kind when one day  neighborhood girls brought them  "An orphaned three toed sloth"  who they would give the name Buttercup.    Eventually dozens of sloths arrived at the center, when the community learned of the couple's care and study of Buttercup and other "three and two towed sloths" who were found abandoned or injured.

Today, Buttercup sits for visitors to see on her special "Queen Chair" and even offers a handshake as if to say, "thanks for stopping by and yes, I started it all"

As a visitor to the refuge, you can take a magical boat trip of the area's  birding paradise, enjoy lunch and an educational lecture about the sloth and their peril due to their changing environment.  "In some cases, deforestation forces starving mothers to abandon their babies and search for new homes.  Sometimes people kill the mothers out of fear or ignorance or cruelty. Sometimes mothers are poisoned by agro-chemical and fertilizers and sometimes the babies and the mothers are simply to afraid to retrieve them for fear of people and dogs." *  In any event, the orphaned babies raised in captivity will never have the skills necessary to survive in the forest and must live in the sanctuary since Mom teaches them what they need to know to survive.

So here we have one couple, without government funding, that decided to do something.  Just do something.  They began a foundation and tours to support care of the sloths and now have 14 full-time employees and numerous volunteers acting as guardians of these incredible  creatures who are faced with the perils of development.

So, what's the skinny on sloths?  Here's perhaps a few facts you might not be aware of:

1.  They are not bears and they are not lazy!  They are members of the Xenarthra order, along with armadillos and anteaters.

2.  They have staying power....They have been around for 60 million years!  Longer than any business I know.  That's adaptability.

3.  They are not all the same.  Get your Three-Toed and Two Toed Sloths Right.  Visit the center and learn about the important differences.

4.  They have Skills against Predators.    They smell like vegetation which serves as a form of camouflage and yes, they move slowly in daylight, but at night they can move swiftly when need be.

5.  They don't take alot of bathroom breaks!  In fact they only leave the tree-tops once a week for that function.  PS:  They don't smoke either.  Talk about productivity.

One cannot visit the rescue center without a sense of responsibility to these amazing and gentle creatures.  What can you do to help?  1) While in Costa Rica, rescue a sloth when you see them on dangerous roadways and the center can tell you how.  2) Visit the Center  They also have a hotel and gift shop which support their work. 3)  Adopt a Sloth this Holiday Season.  What could be a more  special gift than giving a gift of a Sloth?  Since, they don't care much for city living, we recommend that you send a donation to Aviarios Sloth Rescue Center.  (You can adopt a sloth for amount of $100 or more) and your recipient will receive a photograph and other goodies which Buttercup has personally approved of.

4)  Even though the name implies one of the 7 deadly sins, remember sloths are an amazing gift from nature and deserve our respect love and protection!

Please visit their site today!
